Clinical value

Why custom splinting matters in pediatric & neonatal therapy

A safer, better-fitting orthosis can change tolerance, carryover, and outcomes — especially in medically fragile populations.

Better anatomical fit

Support alignment, tone, positioning, and comfort across rapid developmental stages — without relying on “close enough” sizing.

Protects skin integrity

Learn material choices, edge finishing, and safety checks that reduce breakdown risk in neonates and medically complex children.

Improves adherence

When orthoses are comfortable and routine-friendly, families use them more consistently — improving ROM, joint integrity, and function.

Adapts to growth

You’ll learn when to modify, re-check fit, and adjust proactively as infants and kids grow — reducing long-term device problems.

Diagnosis-specific support

Apply splinting principles for brachial plexus injury, tone differences, fractures, clubfoot, and complex presentations.

Family-centered carryover

Teach wear/care, skin checks, and routines clearly — so splinting supports participation, not stress.

Why this training matters

Pediatric splinting comes with real clinical risk.

Many pediatric therapists receive minimal formal splint training — yet are expected to fabricate orthoses for fragile infants and children with complex medical needs.

This course helps you make safer decisions, fabricate with better fit, and document with clarity — so splinting supports function without compromising skin integrity.

All splint supplies are mailed directly to you — so you can practice without rationing materials.

Child wearing a pediatric splint

More than a training — a reusable system.

You’ll leave with a structured toolkit that supports safer decisions, better splint fit, and clear documentation — so you can apply what you learn immediately across NICU, acute care, outpatient, and early intervention.

Small class sizes = hands-on feedback on your work (not just watching demonstrations).

Clinical reasoning & decision support

Think clearly. Choose the right splint. Defend your clinical decisions.

Fabrication tools you’ll rely on

Save time. Reduce guesswork. Fabricate with confidence.

Documentation, billing & goals

Protect your license and support reimbursement with clear justification.

Interdisciplinary & caregiver communication

Build trust. Improve carryover. Strengthen team collaboration.

Proof

What happens when therapists practice with real guidance

Confidence increases when you’ve fabricated with support — and you have materials to keep refining your skills.

“I’ve been practicing pediatrics for 15 years and had not done much splinting… this course was exactly what I needed to start using this intervention when I returned to work on Monday in our NICU.”

— Brandi, NICU PT

“I highly recommend this course to any pediatric or neonatal therapist looking to deepen their expertise, strengthen interdisciplinary collaboration, and elevate care through evidence-informed orthotic practice.”

— Shannon, OTR/L (Acute Care Neonatal/Pediatric OT)

“Having enough time to practice — and enough materials to try again without worrying about running out — was huge. The small class size made it comfortable to interact and receive feedback on my work.”

— Paige, OT

Why this course exists

Splinting shouldn’t feel high-risk or uncertain.

Therapists are often expected to support infants and children with splinting — without formal, hands-on training. This course closes that gap with a safety-first, clinically grounded approach tailored to neonatal and pediatric care.

Led by an experienced NICU clinician

Taught by Rachael Petrie, OTR/L, CNT, CIMC, NTMTC, a full-time NICU occupational therapist with over a decade of experience in NICU, acute care, and outpatient pediatrics. Her instruction emphasizes conservative clinical reasoning, safety, and functional outcomes — so you can apply these skills across settings with confidence.

Disclosures: Financial: Rachael is employed by Pediatric Theratools and receives an honorarium for this course. Non-Financial: none reported.

Everything you need to know about online learning, your splint fabrication kit, and the live Zoom lab.

How does the hybrid orthotics course work?

This course combines self-paced online learning with one live, instructor-guided fabrication lab on Zoom.

You'll complete the foundational coursework before your scheduled live lab, then join Rachael Petrie, OTR/L, for hands-on splint fabrication, demonstrations, clinical discussion, and individualized feedback.

The complete hybrid course includes 14.0 contact hours.

When will the online modules become available?

The self-paced online modules will be available beginning December 1, 2026.

You can work through the lessons at your own pace before your scheduled live fabrication lab. Completing the online coursework beforehand helps you arrive prepared for hands-on learning.

Your splint fabrication kit will be shipped directly to you approximately 4–6 weeks before your scheduled live lab date.

You'll receive an email with your shipping tracking number when your kit ships.

Please make sure your shipping address is accurate when enrolling.

What supplies do I need to provide at home?

In addition to the splint fabrication kit mailed to you, please have the following supplies available for your live lab:

We also recommend preparing a clean, comfortable workspace with adequate lighting for hands-on fabrication.

What time is the live Zoom fabrication lab?

All live fabrication labs are scheduled from 8:30 AM to 4:00 PM.

Important: The time zone varies depending on the course date you select.

Please double-check the time zone listed for your specific live lab date and review your enrollment confirmation so you join at the correct time.

Do I need to attend the live Zoom lab?

You'll participate in guided fabrication, receive instructor feedback, and have opportunities to ask questions as you apply the techniques.

A computer with a reliable internet connection, camera, and microphone is recommended for participation.

Is this course approved for continuing education?

Yes. This course is approved by AOTA for 1.4 CEUs (14.0 contact hours) and approved by the Florida Board of Physical Therapy.

Custom orthotic fabrication may fall within OT/PT scope depending on state regulations, institutional policies, and the presence of a physician or provider order.

This course reviews scope-appropriate decision-making and emphasizes orders, documentation, and interdisciplinary collaboration.

Therapists are responsible for practicing within their own licensure and workplace policies. Please verify continuing education acceptance with your licensing board.

I've never fabricated a splint before. Is this course beginner-friendly?

Absolutely. The course is designed to build skills progressively.

You'll first learn foundational concepts through the self-paced online modules. During the live lab, Rachael will guide you through fabrication techniques with real-time demonstrations, feedback, and opportunities for questions.
